Free Siddhartha Essays: Significance of the River :: Hesse Siddhartha Essays

The Significance of the River in Siddhartha In the book Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse the significance of the river is displayed throughout the experiences that Siddhartha has next to the river and the things that by listening to the sound he comes to understand. Siddhartha is learning something from the moment he rides the ferry to the time when Govinda lays on the ground with tears flowing uncontrollably. Siddhartha admits to having no money to pay for the voyage, but the Ferryman says that friendship is payment enough, and takes him into town. After leaving town, Siddhartha returns to the river where had met the Ferryman earlier. Intrigued by the river's beauty and silent wisdom, Siddhartha decides to stay by the river. Siddhartha soon meets the Ferryman Vasuveda, the same man who took him across the river earlier. Siddhartha offers to be Vasuveda's apprentice, an offer that the Ferryman graciously accepts. The two grow together as Siddhartha begins to learn the river's wisdom, and soon Siddhartha begins to emulate Vasuveda's demeanor, expressing a contented peace in the routine of daily life. Years pass. One day, the two Ferrymen hear that the Buddha is dying. Kamala, on hearing the news as well, travels with her son to be near Goatama. As she passes near the river, she is bitten by a snake and dies, but not before Vasuveda takes her to Siddhartha. After Kamala dies, Siddhartha keeps his son with him by the river. The boy, though, refuses to accept Siddhartha as his father and consequently does nothing he is told. Many months pass, but the boy remains intransigent. Eventually the boy runs away. Vasuveda tells Siddhartha to let him go, but Siddhartha follows him. Upon reaching the town, Siddhartha recalls his own experiences there and admits to himself what he knew all along, that he could not help the boy. Siddhartha feels a great sorrow at this loss, and the happiness he had known as a Ferryman leaves him. Vasuveda soon arrives and leads the despondent Siddhartha to back to the river. The pain of losing his son was long lasting for Siddhartha. It enabled him, however, to identify with ordinary people more than ever before. Though Siddhartha was beginning to understand what wisdom really is, the thought of son did not leave him. One day he sets off in search of his son, but stops as he heard the river laughing at him. Biological influences on gender Essay

First 40 days after conception, embryos develop in the same way and have female and male anatomy If ovum is fertilised by a sperm carrying another X chromosome, the gonads develop into ovaries. The male elements of anatomy disintegrate; the female ones thicken and grow into a womb. The external anatomy develops into female genitalia. If the ovum is fertilised by a sperm carrying a Y chromosome, the gonads cells convert into testes. The male internal organs develop and the female organs disintegrate. External male genitalia develop. All human embryos would develop into females unless they are masculinised by the Y chromosome. Hormones: After the sex chromosomes, the hormones provide the main biological influences on sexual differentiation. Males and females produce androgens The male hormone is testosterone The female hormones are oestrogen and progesterone Hormone levels can be taken as a measure of masculinisation and feminisation Under/over exposure to hormones during the critical period (6 to 8 weeks) can affect later gender related behaviour; boys exposed to too little testosterone may become less masculine and girls exposed to large amounts of testosterone may be more masculine. Hormones from the gonads influence the development of genitalia, the brain and gender behaviour. By week 8 of gestation, the gonads are producing hormones. It is hard to establish hormonal influences on behaviour because there are other influences that affect our behaviour such as the nature, nurture debate Brain differences: Clear differences can be found in the brain function of adult men and women, particularly the function and anatomy of the hypothalamus, these difference however are not found in children under 6 years old Green (1995) states that testosterone may affect other brain structures such as those which influence aggressive behaviour, no direct evidence has been found The degree of lateralisation in male and female brains is another difference. The left hemisphere controls speech and language while the right hemisphere controls spatial skills with information being passed between hemispheres through the corpus coliseum. Shaywitz & Shaywitx (1995) used MRI scans to examine the brain whilst men and women carried out language tasks. Found that women used both hemispheres o the brain whereas men used the left hemisphere studies that support, with evaluation points There are four sources of evidence to assess the link between biology and gender behaviour; animal studies, case study research, correlating hormone levels and gender behaviour. animal studies: young (1966) studied rats, a species where male and females show very different sexual behaviours males mount from behind and females adopt the â€Å"lordosis† position (back arched, head low) gave doses of male hormones to female rats and vice versa during critical period found that they showed reverse behaviours, males adopted the â€Å"lordosis† position and females attempted to mount from behind supports the idea that hormones are responsible for deciding male/female mating behaviour Animal studies evaluation points: – The issue of the use of animals in research, is it ethical? unethical to†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦ it is ethically wrong to inflict such pointless suffering upon any living creature. Either animals are so dissimilar to us that we cannot logically apply the results of animal tests to humans, or they are so similar that it is unethical to test upon them – cannot apply to humans and make generalisation because he anatomy of a rat is very different to the anatomy of a human. Cannot assume that humans would show the same results. There is no way to really know because it would be extremely unethical to manipulate hormones into humans during the critical period. we have to use case studies, like the young study, and wait for them to occur naturally +supports biological approach, shows that hormones are responsible for gender behaviour +it is a lab experiment, which means that there is lots of control and variables can be controlled, it also means that it is very reliable as it is a scientific experiment†¦.. + which lead on to the fact that the experiment is replicable, not a lot is needed to carry out the experiment, just rats an hormones then all that you need to do s observe the rats Case study research:Money & Erhardt (1972) 1 sister was exposed to male hormones in utero compare to sister who was not mother was asked to comment on games played, toys used and clothing choices exposed girl = boyish girls, higher IQ and career aspirations follow up in 1974 showed only one difference in girls is that the exposed girl was more physically active Money and Erhardt evaluation points:: – Many of the questions asked were leading questions â€Å" which of your daughters is the most tomboyish?†, the researchers may have used these to get a particular type of answer – follow up study in 1974 found only one difference, that the exposed girls were more physically active + Natural experiment†¦, ethical, high ecological validity + supports biological approach, although there is not strong evidence there still is evidence to show that there is a link between biology and gender behaviour – because the mother was told that her child is going to be more interested in boyish activities, she could have unintentionally encouraged more boyish behaviours onto her daughter Hines (1984) 3- 8 year old boys and girls with congenital adrenal hypersia (CAH) examined the amount of rough and tumble play compared them to an unaffected control group found minor difference between CAH girls and control group girls CAH girls preferred playing with boys in 2004, compared 25 men and women who had CAH with their unaffected relatives both groups asked to think back and recall childhood gender role behaviour women with CAH recalled more â€Å"boy related behaviours† boys with CAH were no different to their unaffected male relatives Hines evaluation points: + natural experiment, nothing was forced + used a control group, shows comparison+used both males and females, no gender bias +ethical†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦. because it is natural experiment -lacks population validity, does not say how many ppts in 1994 study and only 25 ppts in 2004 study -ignores environmental factors influencing behaviours, such as sibling and role models -showed only limited evidence supporting the biological approach correlating hormone levels and gender behaviour in normal populations: Deady et al looked at relationship between gender role orientation an testosterone levels in child free young women asked ppts to complete SRI and asked how â€Å"broody† they felt and ideal age for having first child found women with high salivary levels of testosterone tended to have lower scores relating to the desire to have children lower maternal drives may be related to higher levels of male hormones Deady et al evaluation points Only shows a link, no cause and effect +objective measure†¦.. unbiased measurement/analysis, in that you measure what is there and not impacted by your beliefs or philosophy of something†¦that is for subjective measurement/analysis. Even when he though that he was a girl he still felt like he was the wrong gender, without even knowing that he was biologically male. + Case study, lots of information, detailed account, valid +supports that nature, nurture doesn’t have as much control evaluation of the role of genes and hormones +scientific approach to gender, gender -> biology -> science -> objective, sex/gender is the same +implications on real life situations, e.g. Olympics- compete with the gender that you identify with, genetic sex no longer determines gender +makes sense, we inherit other features such as hair and eye colour, why not gender features + lots of supporting evidence 1. animal studies 2. case studies say how it supports-> +&- of studies 3. correlation studies 4. boy who was raised as a girl lots of supporting evidence, cannot generalise too deterministic†¦ gender= determined by your genes ignores other factors that determine gender role behaviour e.g. role models, siblings, media, education reductionist, reducing behaviour down to genes, hormones and genes (biology) nurture, transgender, supports nurture behaviourist approach, gender is learnt other approaches, Freud, psychosexual stages

A Farewell to Arms a Classic Display of Literature

A Farewell To Arms Ernest Hemmingways A Farewell To Arms is a classic display of literature. The way he develops his characters is ingenious. In the beginning of the story I did not like the way it was going. As I read deeper into the book, A Farewell To Arms I discovered the complexity of the characters themselves. I discovered that Frederic Henry was a rather complex character as well. When you are finally given the full picture of Frederic Henry, you realize that he can be described in several different ways. First, Frederic Henry is a round and very dynamic character. You also realize that because Mr. Henrys mannerisms are so easily recognizable, he is a stock character as well. The point of view in the story is written in†¦show more content†¦A stock character is a character that is easily identifiable by the way they behave. Frederic Henry is very easy to identify. First off he almost always speaks in the plural form. For example, when he buys himself a gun he turns t o Catherine and says, now we are fully armed, as if she too is armed.(Monteiro, 71) Another characteristic that Frederic Henry has, is that he is always trying to help other people. Throughout the entire story there are examples of he and his men out on the battlefield, and Frederic coming to someones aid. Since this behavior takes place so many times you automatically know that it is Frederic Henry who is coming to the rescue. The event that is most memorable is when Frederic and his men are captured and Frederic manages to help all his men escape. Upon the escape Frederic rows he and his crew for over twenty miles to safety, in Switzerland.(Gellens, 45) The point of view in A Farewell To Arms, is a first person point of view. The interesting thing is that even though its a first person point of view, its a first person point of view that is expressed in a plural sense. All threw the story Frederic Henry uses the phrase we to refer to himself and his group of friends. Another int eresting thing is that later into the story Frederics usage of the word we changes from referring to his group of friends to his relationship with Catherine. What is the writer trying to say? What do you think the key issues are that have been identified? Do you think transgender is a choice or something inherent? Did you identify any other issues not reported? Critically analyse and reflect upon theories of oppression, discrimination and inequality:- o Culture and attitudes o Biology o Medical theories o Psychological factors o Choice Offer your thoughts and views on what services you think should be made available to transgender children and young people. Conclusion 7 references which must appear to the relevant text. Answers: Task 1- Sex defines the everlasting and unchallengeable organic uniqueness general to persons in all civilizations and societies, while gender is character counterfeit all through the history of social relationships. Gender, even though it begins in intent biological divergences, it goes far away from the organic and physiological details of the two sexes in stipulations of the functions each is likely to play. There are typically two genders, which are male and female, both these genders have different impact on an individual. Impact of gender on males is that they are tall, masculine, broad-shouldered, self-confident, and aggressive and can do household repairs (Langan, 2015). Impact of gender on males is that they are passive, submissive, caring, small, graceful and soft. Though with change in time society has changed a lot, not to a large extent males and females are considered equal in the society, law gives equal rights to both the genders, but still there are certain societies that consider females inferior to males and in some societies females are looked down upon. Both males and females have sexual urges which they need to satisfy, both of them need to accept their sexuality. Sexually and physically a male is attracted to a female and a female is attracted to a male, these are natural instincts. Though both males and females have equal sexual urges still in many societies, mostly non western women are just considered as objects, they are not allowed to celebrate and accept their sexuality, while a man can have a sexual relationship with many women, a woman is looked down upon if she does the same (Swisher, 1991). Social roles of both males are females are also different, even though with times it has changed and females have started accepting almost all the roles of males and vice versa, but from earlier times roles of males and females were different, while man was seen as a provider, he was required to look after the needs of the family and protect them provide them with food, while the duty of a woman was to take care of home and kids. With change in times there has been a role change and now women have also started working for earnings (James, 2013). Gender roles are defined according to culture, some cultures are more modern and open minded than the others. While in western societies where the culture is open, equal rights are given to both males and females, but in some Islamic countries even in todays era there is a difference between males and females and women are not given equal rights in the society (Mead, 2012). Identity is very important to each and every individual; each individual has a different set of values and beliefs, which he learns in his course of life. This beliefs and values make him different from others and help him in being a better person. There are some people fro whom their beliefs are very important to them and there are others who can easily compromise on them and change them accordingly (Smith, 1990). References James, R., 2013. Charleston, WV. Task- 2 Transgenderis the condition of one'sgender individualityor gender appearance not identical to one'sallocated sex.Transgender is autonomous ofsexual course. A transgender can be a person who has a body off a male but has characteristics of a male and also feels like a female or vice versa. Transgender also include homosexuals or bisexuals, person who is attracted to people of same gender (Reis, 1999). Being a transgender is very difficult as transgender are looked down upon in the society and are many times not given equal opportunities in the society. In case of a child being a transgender becomes all the way more difficult as at such a young age he is not able to understand what is wrong with him, he does not feel like a normal person and is not able to understand his body (Pardo, 2008). In many case a child feels like a female trapped in a male body or vice versa, he becomes confused between what the society wants him to be and what actually he is, he goes under a lot of pressure because of his body. There are times when he tries to explain to his family what he feels and what he wants, but most of the time their reply is that this is just a passing phase which shall pass with the time and advice him how to act like a boy or a girl, totally falling to understand that how the body of the child is actually designed. It should be noted that being a transgender is not a choice it i s just the way some ones body is designed and nobody can do anything to change it (Bernat, 2006). A transgender is always oppressed in the society; people hate him and bully him. There are many case where transgender people and sexually abused and made fun off, they are not given equal opportunities and they cannot even complain about it as they are not taken seriously by even the administration. Transgender are always discriminated in the society, as they dont fall in the usual category of male or female. Many times even their family members disown them. Many of the transgender have made their communities only because we people dont treat them equal. These people are much difficulty in getting jobs; as a result they have no other choice left other than going into flesh trade. Transgender people are seldom given equal rights in our society; they are kept away from our society and are not considered equal just because they are not like us. Treatment of transgender also depends on the culture and attitude of the people, if the people are civilized then there are chances that they will treat transgender people with equality, but these chances decrease if the people in question are not cultured. Bodies of transgender are different from regular males and females. There are two medical theories about transgender which are The Medical Model In spite of research representing a variety of gender individuality and terms (Denny, the medical approach identifies sex inside a binary build of male or female, and gender inside a linear binary, that is men are masculine and women are feminine. With its main focus on SRS, this model does not put room for a wider variety of healthy transgender individuality. The Authentic Model The Authentic Model explains that gender survives on non-binary male and female proportions. In this model, unbeaten individuality growth is open to individualized routes. Individuality consolidation does not need SRS as is required in the medical model. Rather, in this model individuality is attained through authentic self- coherence (Bolin, 1988). Transgender people have to go through a lot of stress and pressure, especially when they are young, as they feel different and left out, as kids they are always bullied and made fun of. They cannot make many friends and remain isolated. The worst stress that they face is that they are not able to express their feelings and even their own parents are not able to understand them and look down upon them. These people feel that the society hates them and it will never be possible for them to live a normal life. They see that their future is dim and they dont have any possibility of getting a job and can only become prostitutes (Fitzpatrick, 2005). The worst part is that the people believe that they have become like this from choice, people feel disgusted from the fact that they are attracted to the same sex. Society should be made aware about transgender and their problems. There should be classes in schools where students should be explained about how difficult the lives of transgender people are, how they feel and how much pressure they have to go through from the society. Young students should also be taught to empathize with such people; young kids should be taught about their body. Not only young people but also adults should be taught about this issue, which is still a taboo in many cultures. Parents should be taught about how they should treat their transgender child and encourage and motivate him (Lev, 2004). Parents should be counseled in such a way that they develop an understanding with their kids and understand immediately whenever their kid tries to explain them something different with his body. Parents should be taught to except their kids the way they are, and should also be explained what hiding the orientation of their kids can do to them. Young kids should also be coun seled regularly; government should also come forward and try to help this quantity. There are still many countries that prohibit same sex marriages, governments should look into this matter and try to understand that being transsexual is not a disease or choice, but an orientation which is impossible to change. Government should also give some reservations to transsexual people in jobs (Denny, 2004). From the above we can conclude that transgender is a reality in our society, but still there are societies which try to avoid this fact and dont give equal opportunities to transgender people, equal opportunities for transgender people is need off the hour. Strategies for International Industrial Evaluating Marketing

Question: Discuss about the Strategies for International Industrial Evaluating Marketing. Answer: Introduction: The business target market today is brutal, cutthroat and allows no slacker to survive the dynamic tides. The consumer market has changed radically since the onset of global financial crisis. To cope with the random blows of recession the business markets started the game of pleasing customers, heeding to all of the unrealistic and obscene demands, has given rise to a frightening world of completion. Bringing the conglomerates into mix, it has enthralled the consumers with a wide variety displayed across hundreds of square feet and captivating discount schemes. Consumers are now accustomed to find everything on their fingertips, and the service providers are not shying away from blatantly heeding to all their demands (Arnett and Wittmann 2014). This revolutionary change in the consumer market has brought upon the era of cutthroat competition, and that competition is now starting to choke the small fishes in the market. Hence the world of promotional marketing has changed as well for better or for worse. The business organization are now incorporating more and more tricks up their sleeves (Arnett and Wittmann 2014). With the global trend of inclination towards internet and social media the marketing trends had to incorporate social media marketing as well. Studies suggest that a business market has to include social media and online marketing along with conventional marketing techniques to survive the ever changing market scenarios. This report attempts to formulate a business marketing plan for a company named BBQfun and evaluate different marketing activities in order to evaluate the significance of each (McKenzie, Neiger and Thackeray 2016). Marketing and marketing plans: Marketing plan can be defined as the carefully planned well articulated steps organized in a chronological order that will benefit the organization by increasing the popularity of the organization so that the organization attains stable and continual professional growth. Marketing is considered with needs and wants of the organization aligning with the needs and wants of its consumer market in an effortless manner. BBQfun is a organization opened in 2009 providing extensive range of products be it local or imported goods. However with the onset of 2010 the organization has faced the burn of mounting competition in the retail market. The change in the consumer market has caused the sales status to drop radically (Arnett and Wittmann 2014). The company has attempted to revive its sales patterns in the recent years to return to their standard sales of $11 in the recent years. BBQfun has managed to incorporate changes in their marketing plan to return the consumer base to the maximum. They have two operational outlets in Brisbane and Queensland, both in suburban areas with a multicultural and diverse consumer crowd. However their marketing policy is not very effective in retaining the crowd the manner they are hoping it would. They want to move their sales record to $12 millions within 2012 and to $15 millions within 2015. Along with that they aim to increase the marker shares to 25% within 2012 and increase their customer loyalty list from 8000 to 12000 within the next year as well. Moreover they attempt to increase their brand recognition in Brisbane to a point where at least one out of three residents recognize the rand name. However their marketing plans are not much to achieve all these goals. Analyzing this situation in elaborative effort, the target market profiling for the company is vastly lacking. The target market from Brisbane has enough detail on teir inclination towards renovation, however for the other nearby suburbs, there is no information on the lifestyle inclination of the residents. This differential knowledge on target market has drastically affected the sales pattern and market recognition. Due to the faulty and backdated market strategy the BBQfun authority has resorted to online and electronic media marketing to revive the sales pattern. However it albeit reviving the sakes to some extent is not nearly enough for the goals set for the future and support the great expense for expansion of the business. As a result the gross sales of the company has increased markedly with the net profit remaining flat as before. The market shares and net sales has improved gradually however the profit is emptied out by the massive expense of advertising and online media marketing, there is need for strategic improvisations to the market plan (Ashley and Tuten 2015). Marketing policies and procedures: Along with keeping in par with market trends for a business organization to strive it is important for the organization to comply with the regulatory legislations (Galician 2013). The policies apply to all the staff and is available to all the employees in BBQfun premises. The market plan complies with the privacy act, no call registration legislation, no discrimination policy and competition and consumerism act. The employees are to adhere rto the legislations na marketing policy at all circumstances. Recommendations: In my opinion BBQfun is attempting to sell an extensive range of retail and lifestyle needs and is mainly in the suburban area. Hence their target market is the middle class suburban residents of Brisbane and Queensland and the surrounding area, the small business vendors and local markets. The previous marketing activities that have been incorporated by the company include major emphasis on the electronic marketing and advertisements. It has to be considered that the electronic marketing and advertisement promotion was a trend of the last decade (Grnroos and Grnroos 2016). In todays scenario, it is not only useless but is also too expensive to be useful. The company could increase the sales considerably but the most of the profit went to feed the marketing campaign and rendered the entire effort useless. They are in dire need of powerhouse marketing incorporating corporate marketing skills coupled with more modern techniques that can capture the attention of the target market they are aiming for (Hallbck and Gabrielsson 2013). As a suggestion i would recommend the company to invest in online media marketing with excellent PR professionals devoted to the social media growth of the company (McKenzie, Neiger and Thackeray 2016). It has to be considered that the generation of today spends much more time surfing internet than watching television or reading newspapers. Investing in sources that will actually reach their target market will definitely boost their profit and will also curb their skyrocketing marketing expense (McKenzie, Neiger and Thackeray 2016). Legislation : the legislation that align with the changes neded to be incorporating ino the marketing plan include Adhere to Privacy Act. Adhere to Do Not Call Register legislation Adhere to anti-discrimination policy (Ryan 2016) Adhere to the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 (formerly the Trade Practices Act). The outcome that this method will construct will be a significant rise in their sales graph, and instant boost to their profit range. Along with that they will get the boost to their market popularity as well that will increase their market shares markedly and widen their customer base in the period of a year or two (Sah and Fugh-Berman 2013).alysis Reference List: Arnett, D.B. and Wittmann, C.M., 2014.
